Now, some UX design prototyping for a problem we all share: using persuasion techniques to motivate people to consider the environmental impact of their mobile photos. The video explains the user-centred design approach adopted to nudge environmentally-minded people to personalise their app experience when managing their photos.

This was an MSc in User Experience (UX) design project for IADT.

The journey to a sustainable app prototype

I hope you find this story interesting and that the research and findings are of some use for your own design and sustainability work. This is a fascinating area. It is the start of a new UX design journey for me.

A walkthrough of the prototype app illustrates the key parts of the user experience.

Here’s a video walkthrough of the FOTONS photo management app that I researched and designed for the MSc in user experience design at IADT.

Why?

Photos are stored in the cloud, and that means carbon emissions. The app uses UX design nudging (or persuasion) principles to increase positive motivation toward the environment when taking mobile photos (54,000 taken every second!). The nudging techniques used are called out during the walkthrough.

How?

I applied a user-centred design process for the prototype. The video explains the research and decisions behind the design, and maybe where to go next on your UX sustainability journey.

I hope you find the walkthrough of use for your own design and sustainability work.
